BIRTHDAY ON A BUDGET | tropical theme

Birthday parties don't have to be extravagant or expensive to be cute and memorable!

We threw a really fun birthday party with some cute decor that didn't cost much at all! We had a large number of people and chose to include food so that was an additional cost, but just talking decor and supplies, this birthday was right around $25!! Here's how we did it:

DOLLAR TREE ITEMS:

BALLOONS $3 GREENERY $4

PLATES $4

NAPKINS $3

CUPS $4

TARGET:

WOODEN BANNER $5

WALMART:

SMALL CAKE (mix, frosting, candle) $3

LET'S TALK "HOW TO" SPECIFICS.

BALLOON GARLAND

  1. Cut a string the length that you want your garland to be (add an additional foot on each end for hanging). Tie one end of the string to a chair/door handle/etc--this will make it easier when adding the balloons later.

  2. Blow up the balloons yourself (or use a pump) to varying sizes and tie off the balloon ends. (Number of balloons depends on how large/long you want your garland. We used about 35 balloons here.)

  3. Cut a 3-4 inch piece of string for each balloon. Tie the string around the base of the knot of the balloon. (You only need to tie it once.)

  4. Tie the balloons using a double knot, onto the long piece of string in no particular order. As you add the balloons, you will just slide them snugly together. Add balloons until your garland is full and balanced.

  5. Optional step: If you're adding greenery, hang the garland first in your desired spot and then fill the garland in with greenery by taping the leaves/pieces to the balloons or garland string.

LEAF WALL

  1. Cut long pieces of twine and tape them vertically on the wall. (Tying a knot just above the tape will help keep the twine from sliding out of the tape and falling over time.)

  2. Hot glue greenery pieces to the string. We left open spaces large enough to attach photographs between the leaves.

SMALL CAKE

  1. Using a box cake of your choice, prepare the batter as directed and then divide in half. Bake in two baking dishes.

  2. Once baked, let cool, wrap each in saran wrap, and freeze for at least one hour.

  3. Remove from freezer and unwrap.

  4. Add a good amount of frosting (we used Pillsbury cream cheese frosting) to the top of one cake and then stack the other cake on top. Frost the outside of the cake lightly and imperfectly to create a naked cake look.

  5. Add choice of candle(s).

In place of the greenery used in these projects: you can also get a tropical leaf template off of google and trace it onto green poster-board multiples times and cut out all sorts of leaves! This option may save you a couple of bucks but is definitely more work.
